    Here some thoughts:

    Networking is great but will choke you if nobody decides to take you on, so…

    • Participate in design contests
    • Think up projects of your own (posters for example) and put them on Kickstarter
    • Participate in hackathons and other events that will make people see how great you are to work with (Up Globals’ Startupweekends e.g. are excellent for this purpose plus a lot of fun)
    • Do spontaneous unauthorized work for local (quality) businesses that are in need of a brand make-over, show them how you think they can look a lot better

    In other words: sell by actually producing work.

    The best way to get clients for a new graphic design agency is networking. You will find that every city has a thriving community of entrepreneurs and business owners in need of graphic design work, visual communication and marketing and most of them struggle to find a provider of solutions that adequate their usually modest budgets. Some of these clients wont give you big revenues but they represent a great opportunity to build portfolio and most importantly start recommending your work to others.

    Get some stunning business cards and flyers and start doing research about networking events that you can find in your city. Chambers of commerce usually host several networking events during the year, some of them free and some others with an entrance fee. You can look at it as an investment in your company.
    Attend as many events as you can and once there start talking to people about how you can satisfy their design and communication needs.

    Another potential source of great work are in non-for-profit organisations who usually give you more creative freedom and represent great exposure opportunity to your agency.
